Balcony Festival returns for its sixth outing on Saturday 20th June – the online music festival has raised around £5,000 so far for causes including NHS Charities Together, Refuge and The Trussell Trust and donations received from this event will go to The Mental Health Foundation.
A collaboration between Joyzine and fellow UK blogs and promoters Louderthanwar, LOUD WOMEN, God Is In The TV Zine, GigSlutz, The Zine UK, Benumu, Crocroland, Sonic Tonic and Quarantini, the festival will feature exclusive performances from one band selected by each promoter and will be broadcast on www.joyzine.org and our partner blogs.

Playing the Joyzine stage will be artpop cult heroes David Devant & His Spirit Wife, whose new album Cut Out Keep Me is out now. Like the bastard child of Bowie, Roxy Music and cult TV series The Prisoner, David Devant & His Spirit Wife have the vision, the style and the originality to show you a better life. And it’s all done by kindness.
Sherika Sherard will be playing the Benumu Stage. Prepare to be challenged and positively moved as you experience the infectious creativity of Sherika Sherard. With a voice like velvet to deliver her robust persona this artist never fails to warm the hearts of listeners. Born and raised in South London, it was after listening to Marvin Gaye that Sherika came to realise she also wanted to discover her deepest emotions through performance and songwriting. When finding her sound Sherika says “Paolo Nutini told me to pick up the guitar and Nina Simone told me to reflect the current times.”
Velvet Starlings style Psychedelic indie-rock from L.A. with inflections of a raw blues and a vintage guitar element shot through with an indie-pop summer haze, a glowing whirrring Hammond organ and raw uplifting riffs. Frontman Christian Gisborne will play the Gigslutz Stage.
Stepping in after Nervous Twitch had to pull out of the festival, indie-pop Joyzine favourites Fightmilk will play for our guest promoters Reckless Yes Records.
On the God Is In The TV Stage, will be dark folk artist Ailsa Tully. Intricate melodies that weave over brooding basslines, Ailsa Tully is creating an ethereal world that is rooted in folk with darker undertones. Inspired by choral music, folk and indie her sound is haunting, tender and powerful. Her lyrics are both honest and poetic, often exploring feminism and her experiences of being female in her writing. Ailsa has an all-female band which brings her song writing to life, from modal harmonies and driving rhythms to tender emotive melody lines.
Playing the Quarantini Stage, Idealistics are an indie-rock three piece from Cambridgeshire. The band consists of Alexandra Hirsz (Vocals, Bass), Dominique Hirsz (Drums) and George Gillott (Vocals, Guitar). They have been performing together since their mid teens, playing regular gigs at their “home venue” – The Portland Arms in Cambridge and released their debut EP Grades In Ignorance in 2018. Later that year Ali Hirsz shared a stage with Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield singing ‘Little Baby Nothing’ at a sold out gig in Newport, Wales. Being diagnosed with a rare form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Ali advocates on behalf of artists with disabilities and long term illnesses, tryin to improve their chances in the music industry. Idealistics released their latest EP The Rain In OUr Eyes in January 2020.
Playing The Zine UK Stage, RTNmakesmusic is the new solo project from Rhiannon The Nightmare. She shared this message on her Facebook page: “As someone who is often at the mercy of their mental health, this is a cause close to my heart, and on a lighter note, it’s technically my FIRST EVER SOLO GIG and I will 100% be bringing the *drama*.”
