The Joyzine Advent Calendar #20: 24 Days of Free Music Downloads – PET wife & Useless Cities

Yesterday’s Advent Calendar treat was Omni Bael’s crackling ‘Filthy Lucre’ – you can still download it here. Today we have a double helping of free music for you.

As always, the tracks are completely free to to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the tracks (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but with the UK’s independent music venues in peril following almost a year of covid restrictions, we’d love you to make a donation to the Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues campaign if you enjoy these tracks. You can make a donation to the fund, or to a specific venue of your choice here.

PET wife – ASK
Queer, trans experimental pop duo PET wife’s Advent Calendar offering is a glorious subversion that harks back to the huge Christmas pop sounds of the sixties girl bands while turning the outdated sexual politics contained within some festive favourites on its head.

“It’s a jaunty Ronettes-style Christmas song. We were talking about classic Christmas songs and realized many of the lyrics come from a place of romantic entitlement. Noelle wrote the lyrics for “ASK” as a playful subversion of that trope – “you’re not getting me for Christmas.” Noelle is singing lead, with Pet on harmonies, keys, bass, guitar, percussion, etc) and Charlotte Anne Dole on drums. It was produced by Pet at Dirty Tailor Studios in Brooklyn, the artwork is by Noelle, and the track was mastered by Rich Morales at Super Fine Audio.”

The band released mini-album Polychrome earlier in the year and followed it up with non-album single ‘.B.L.O.O.D.O.R.A.N.G.E.’ in October – both are available now via their Bandcamp page.

Useless Cities – Happiness
Bittersweet London indie four-piece Useless Cities are no strangers to the advent calendar, and they’re back again this year with another achingly beautiful slice of melancholic pop noir. Don’t let the name fool you, ‘Happiness’ is destined to tug on your heart-strings. The band would like to “wish everyone ‘Happiness’ in 2021.”

2020 has been a quiet year for Useless Cities but we’re looking forward to hearing what they have in store for us in the new year.
