The Joyzine Advent Calendar #24: 24 Days of Free Music Downloads

It’s the final day of what has been one of the finest Advent Calendars that we’ve put together in its 17 year history. Yesterday saw two fantastic original festive tunes recorded specially for the calendar by Stephen EvEns and Bugeye (you can still download them here) but today we’re sticking to traditional favourites with a pair of covers from the Christmas chart canon.

As always, the tracks are completely free to to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the tracks (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but with the UK’s independent music venues in peril following almost a year of covid restrictions, we’d love you to make a donation to the Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues campaign if you enjoy these tracks. You can make a donation to the fund, or to a specific venue of your choice here.

Without Fidel – Mistletoe & Wine
It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of Cliff, and London trio Without Fidel have come through for us with their version of perhaps his most famous festive tune.

They are formed from three-quarters of electronic indie-poppers Applicants, following the departure of singer Fidel Villeneuve, and following the release of debut single ‘John Coffee’ have popped up sporadically for party gigs (and the occassional Advent Calendar entry of course).

Jeen – Fairytale of New York
It takes a lot of guts to take on The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl’s untouchable Christmas classic – step forward Canadian indie alt-pop artist Jeen, who turns the duelling duet into a battle with internal demons by singing both parts as sparkling guitars cascade around her.

She released a self-titled album in October, to acclaim from the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, BBC Sounds and American Songwriter and is a member of Cookie Duster, alongside Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning who also plays on Jeen.
