Back in those halcyon days of January 2020 when we thought nothing of packing into a crowded, windowless room to undulate to the intoxicating rhythms of actual live music, we happened upon Nun Habit playing one of the ever excellent Get In Her Ears nights at The Finsbury alongside Joyzine faves Hurtling and were immediately charmed by their fuzzy lo-fi guitar pop songs about otter love and having your finger painting destroyed by a rampaging infant. Fast-forward through a dystopian year and a half to a present where the faint hopeful glimmer of a return to normality is hanging by a thread with the spread of the delta variant, and Nun Habit are back with exactly what we need right now – a three minute garage-pop romp featuring dancing washing up gloves.
If that sounds faintly ludicrous, it is – in the best possible way, but the song also tackles the casual forms in which toxic masculinity can manifest, inspired as it was by disparaging comments aimed at singer Greg (who has eczema) for wearing the titular hand-coverings whilst doing the dishes. It’s backed by an excellent rubber glove disco themed home-made video created in true DIY style with some marigolds, a marker pen and some coloured card.
‘Marigolds’ is available now as a digital download from Bandcamp – Nun Habit’s debut album Hedge Fun is due out in August. They play an album launch show at The Victoria, Dalston on 14th August with support from Jemma Freeman and The Cosmic Something.
