‘Greedy’ is the new single from Welsh artist Ailsa Tully. There is so much good music coming out of Wales at the moment and plenty of excellent local labels supporting these musicians and Ailsa Tully is no exception. ‘Greedy’ is a track that must have been written in the sunshine above the clouds which is deliciously at odds with the fact that it comes from the forthcoming Holy Isle EP, a set of four songs documenting a difficult break-up (something I hope to delve into more when I review the EP in August). Ailsa Tully says of ‘Greedy’ that it’s “about the intensity of new beginnings and transitional stages of life where everything feels very raw. It is about the all-consuming feeling of wanting someone and opening myself up to the world in a new and messy way”.
There is an ache to ‘Greedy’, a wistful sense that optimism is trying to pull pessimism out of the quicksand. But it’s an entrancing song which undulates and bubbles along, with the bass and drums pushing the song forward and Ailsa’s pizzicato and glissando cello playing adding musical warp and weft to the song. Ailsa Tully’s voice has a beautifully mellifluous quality as it floats over the backing and then launches skywards in the chorus taking the guitar with it on a jet stream of reverb.
I was very taken with the track ‘Parasite’ released at the start of 2021 and ‘Greedy’ adds to my growing sense that Ailsa Tully could become a very important artist in the coming years.
