The Joyzine Advent Calendar – 24 Days of Free Music Downloads! #15: Dedstrange Records ft. A Place To Bury Strangers, Jealous, Plattenbau, Data Animal, Wah Together + Lunacy

Yesterday’s Advent Calendar window was our biggest free downloads giveaway yet with a treasure trove of tracks from the Reckless Yes Records roster, including Paper Birch, Nervous Twitch, Bitch Hunt, LIINES, Duck, Hearts Beating In Time, The Crystal Furs, French for Rabbits and Japan Review – get them all here. Today we’ve another selection from one of our favourite labels.

As always, the tracks are completely free to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the songs (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but if you’re enjoying the tunes we’d love you to make a donation to the wonderful charity Help Musicians, who offer health and welfare support to musicians at all stages of their lives.

Let’s find out where today’s treats are coming from…

We first crossed paths with Dedstrange Records at this year’s SXSW online festival, where they hosted a showcase that proved to be one of our highlights of the fest (read our review here). Since then we’ve been drawn further in with each release from their globe-trotting roster, which includes artists from Brooklyn to Berlin to Auckland.

Set up by A Place To Bury Strangers’ Oliver Ackermann, basement bongo disco freak Mitchell O’ Sullivan, and the manager with the golden heart, Steven Matrick, Dedstrange describe themselves as “built from the smoldering decay of the music industry and now supporting the new flesh of the scene to let their pure unadulterated passion hit the streets. It is formed by people who have played the game, got beaten down over and over again, but just have to go on because this music has power.

Today, they’ve provided tracks from six members of the Dedstrange family.

Plattenbau

‘Hollywood’ is the first single from Berlin art punks Plattenbau‘s upcoming album Shape / Shifting coming February 11, 2022 (pre-order on Bandcamp now).  Sounding like Joy Division on a dark VHS soundtrack, derailing into an explosive chorus soaked in overdrive,  ‘Hollywood’ is a song about greed and infatuation depicting man’s primal impulses to take, to extract, to possess – rather than to give and to share, but ultimately evinces the belief that this cycle can be broken.

Data Animal

‘Future Primitive’ is the first single and title track from Data Animal‘s upcoming debut LP, Future Primitive, coming March 18, 2022, on Dedstrange. Data Animal disrupts the techno-rock economy with a downtempo meditation on the infantilizing effects of algorithmic artifice. Crunchy drums pound away as dial-up modem synthesizers connect with distant and detached vocals narrating our backslide into forced panoptic de-evolution. This sounds like if Suicide had entered Studio 51 while on the set of Blade Runner. Mastered by Oliver Ackermann, of A Place To Bury Strangers, the track ‘Future Primitive’ came out on August 31st. The Future Primitive LP jacks in on March 18, 2022 – only on Dedstrange (pre-order via Bandcamp).

Jealous

‘K-Hole’ is the first single from double EP Lover/What’s Your Damage? by Berlin via Tel Aviv’s Jealous, the first release on Dedstrange back in August. ‘K-Hole’ hints at the phasing highs and lows of a ketamine trip and its abstract relation to falling in love.  Jealous’s sound has been described as a mix of 70’s Glam rock, Punk, Garage, Country, and Post-punk, with a touch of 90s Riot Girl. In 2019 Jealous played over 70 shows across Europe, including support shows for Viagra Boys, The Black Lips, Amyl And The Sniffers and Surfbort. There was a ton of buzz around their first official release – released on August 16, 2021 and limited to 300 records, it sold out quickly, but you can get the digital version via Bandcamp.

Lunacy

‘Dust’ is the first single from rural Pennsylvania’s dystopian shadow figure Lunacy, featuring single art & text from Jesse Draxler, from the upcoming album Echo In The Memory set for vinyl release in early 2022 (pre-order via Bandcamp). ‘Dust’ explores themes of starting over while being reminded of the past that’s constantly following behind & never seems to leave. The song highlights Lunacy’s genre bending, which holds a reminiscent character to what’s familiar while harnessing something completely unique.

‘Dust’ was released on September 21st on Dedstrange & is available in physical form on a limited tour only double A-Side White Lathe Cut 7”. The 7” includes Screen Printed covers, a black label A-side and a screen printed B-side, limited to 50 Pieces – Available at all upcoming performances on tour with MVTANT while supplies last.

A Place To Bury Strangers

Grimoose reimagines ‘Let’s See Each Other’ as a rolling, gritty electro two-step in this dance remix of the lead single from A Place To Bury Strangers’ upcoming album, See Through You, which is available to pre-order via Bandcamp.

Grimoose warps the beat with a pulsing synth-bass treatment and a mesmerizing gridwork of interlocking electronic rhythms in this swaggering rework of APTBS’ deconstructed post-punk ripper.

Now rung dry of the original’s reverb, Oliver Ackermann’s vocals move towards the front of the mix where they become more of a close whisper than a shout, ratcheting up the intimacy and tension of the song’s refrain.

Wah Together

‘Sayonara’ is the debut single by NYC Supergroup Wah Together which features Phil Mossman (Ex-LCD Soundsystem), Vito Roccoforte (The Rapture), Steve Schiltz (Longwave) and front woman Jaiko Suzuki (Electroputas).  On ‘Sayonara’, infectious Japanese Yé Yé beats swipe right on noisy, noir-tinged motorik excursions to form a psychedelic garage-rock power couple at 45 rpm.  ‘Sayonara’ bids a fond farewell to sweet memories of a lost lover with skewed-but-sugary ‘60s pop melodies, swinging, big beat drumming and no-wave guitar rave-ups like The Runners Four-era Deerhoof raining on Broadcast’s Tender Buttons parade.  Wah Together is an impassioned defense for a shared act of creation. Tracked spontaneously and principally live, ‘Sayonara’ captures the immediacy and spontaneity of a group of musicians listening to— and playing off— one another with genuine affection, curiosity and joy.

Their debut album Let’s Wah Together is out March 4, 2022 on Dedstrange.
