ALBUM REVIEW: TIGER! SHIT! TIGER! TIGER! – BLOOM

When you see the band name TIGER! SHIT! TIGER! TIGER! (T!S!T!T!) for the first time you desperately hope that they have the music to back up such a unique epithet. Well, fear not! All those capital letters and exclamation marks are not just for show as the ethereal fuzz and haunted distortion power of Diego Masciotti (guitar, vocals), Giovanna Vedovati (guitar, vocals) and Nicola Vedovati (drums) is intoxicating.

Originally meant as a term of derision, and now embraced by bands, ‘Shoegaze’ has had a renaissance in recent years with acts such as Bleach Lab, Just Mustard, Musta Huone and Joyzine regulars BDRMM out there exploring the reverb galaxy. T!S!T!T! have been around since the over-caffeinated punk-ska of 2008’s Be Yr Own Shit album. There were the My Bloody Valentine years of 2013’s Forever Young and 2017’s Corners but now we have Bloom where it feels very much like they are more comfortable in their own skin.

Since I heard the single ‘Endless’ with its black mass vibes and a great chord change in the verse, I was sold. The band bend the high-low dissonance of guitar and bass to their will and when you add the brutality of the drums the output can be measured on the Richter Scale. The tension in shoegaze or grunge is how much to balance the ground assault of distortion with the wraithlike vocal that floats above the earthquake like mist and T!S!T!T! are consummate tightrope walkers.

Bloom is a sonic full-court press. TIGER! SHIT! TIGER! TIGER! are plasma globes containing the electrical discharges that crackle inside. I’m sure if Nikolai Tesla were alive and experimenting today he would have TSTT playing at full volume in his laboratory.

TIGER! SHIT! TIGER! TIGER! are Diego Masciotti (guitar, vocals), Giovanna Vedovati (guitar, vocals) and Nicola Vedovati (drums).
