Pavé (pronounced pav-Ay) are a four-piece from Manchester: Alanya-Jade Simms (Lead vocals), Kevin Peate (Guitar), Ben Pursehouse (Drums), and Meg Gale (Bass). ‘Nineteenfifty’ is their new single although it starts with a Humphrey Bogart’s dialogue from 1942 film All Through The Night, “Oh, now listen, big shot, they’ll tell you what time you get up in the morning and what time you go to bed at night. They’ll tell you what you eat, what kind of clothes you can wear, what you drink. They’ll even tell you the morning paper you can read.”
‘Nineteenfifty’ joins their other singles, the furiously pell-mell ‘The End Of Us’ and the stainless steel wings of ‘Slow Movements’, but the heavy riffs are dialled back in favour of wall-of-sound-production and a more ethereal feeling. The major-minor feel of the backing matches is delightfully unsettling like it’s built on shifting sands and kaleidoscopic swirls envelop Simms towering vocals. She easily cuts through sonic miasma with swoops and trills that put me in mind of Elizabeth Fraser of The Cocteau Twins.
Pavé are definitely a cut above the average alternative/psych-rock act and if someone could get them on the same bill as Bleach Lab or Airiel that would be an amazing gig.

Lyrics:
Take a look at the time
Is it already over
well It felt like
It just begun
can you feel it come now
this hurt will take over
but I wont I wont
Step inside
Once more we’ll leave this world behind
we’re losing strength from the divine
well it’s up to us if we survive
Don’t follow Don’t follow if we try
In the grip of one breath
would you dare to admit
passian had led you astray
tell them now, tell them now
what’s keeping you awake
