SINGLE REVIEW: GASOLINA – DRUNK GIRL SUMMER

‘Drunk Girl Summer’ is the new single from Stockholm-based Gasolina, aka Lina Molarin Ericsson. She will look familiar to any ShitKid fans out there as she played bass in the duo back in the day. My first experience was watching her (and the audience, for that matter) getting cake-bombed at the PNKSLM BALL back in 2016; chaos and catchy tunes way back when. Whereas ShitKid was raw and lo-fi, Gasolina has more in common with the Sugababes. ‘Drunk Girl Summer’ is pop perfection from the off-the-beat bass and bouncy castle drums through to the grit and honey vocals that lead up to the chorus which will be superglued to your hippocampus.

My journey with this song went as follows: Listen one: hey, I quite like this. Listen two: this is growing on me. Listen three: Oh, fuck I love this! I NEVER want it to end (said while pushing the repeat-forever button on my streaming service) and endlessly singing along when the chorus kicks in: “Gonna do what I wanna, it’s my drunk girl summer”.

Also props to Lina for the stop motion doll animation which is awash with great details like mini-instruments and amps. The live action sequences also feature one of the PNKSLM label owners, Luke Reilly, getting a drink thrown over him.  This song deserves to be massive; pouring out of radios and Bluetooth speakers the world over, filling playlists and eventually making it on to all the compilations of the year. Now That’s What I Call Booze Music anyone?

WARNING: you might find after repeated listening that ‘Drunk Girl Summer’ will live rent free in your head.
