Paul Diello is a singer/songwriter, musician, and performer from Brighton. I was introduced to him via the Ironworks Studios, a great indie venue and space in Brighton, where Paul hosts and produces specialist nights dedicated to celebrating iconic musicians (Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, PJ Harvey, George Michael to name a few). The work and talent that goes into these shows is phenomenal, and each time feels like an exclusive window into Diello’s stunning vocals, his songwriting and his producing, alongside the talented people he works with.
‘Firework Sky’ is Diello’s new album; a prolific songwriter and engaging performer, this is his fourth album and follows a series of EP’s. The album is a big, theatrical, pop fandango of a listen, with plenty of sensual, evocative tracks that balance the big.
A strong start with ‘Wasted Fortune’, a bold pop ballad with a 90s RnB vibe to boot. The title track is one of my favourites, 80s synths, dreamy production – this has echoes of those celebrated pop icons who have influenced Diello. Elsewhere on the album, tracks like ‘Cobweb Heart’, remind me of a soundtrack to a musical with theatre and drama and performance.
There is such storytelling in Diello’s music, each song is a character. ‘Dream Spill’ is ethereal and atmospheric, my next favourite on the album. It has cinematic strings that give emotion before evolving into a second part, a new character. I can imagine this set to a dance performance, or performed onstage – again, it has a theatrical presence. ‘Swept Away’ has a darker, electronic, Nine Inch Nails vibe with a side of Euro pop, this is very clever songwriting and composing.
Paul Diello writes music that evokes emotion and big feeling. He is a theatrical performer, from cabaret and fringe roots, and his creativity is boundless. The same effort and passion he puts into his live shows, totally vibrates throughout this album. Firework Sky is a feast for the senses so indulge yourself, and make sure you see Diello live – because he will treat you well.
