We’ve a festive blaze to warm your Christmas cockles today courtesy of two downloads from two of the artists on DIY veteran imprint Fire Records.
Founded in 1986, and still as fiercely independent today, Fire has released music from the likes of Pulp, Television Personalities, Guided By Voices and Pere Ubu amongst many others and is still turning out top notch art pop at an astonishing rate from artists both established and new.
Wreckless Eric is a case in point – having started out on Stiff Records back in 1977, he’s been an enduring lo-fi punk icon ever since and is still creating music as vital and honest as ever, as evidenced by his recent album amERICa.
Today, we have a wonderful slice of festive profanity for you in the form of Eric’s sleigh-bell fuelled psyche-pop carol ‘Christmas on the M62‘.
Wreckless Eric plays a trio of London shows at Stoke Newington Old Church this month. The gigs on 3rd and 8th December have sold out but if you’re quick you might just get your hands on a ticket for Tuesday 15th – get them online here.
At those shows, Eric will be ably supported by Tasmanian singer-songwriter Howard Eynon, whose album So What If I’m Standing In Apricot Jam, recently reissued on Fire’s sister label Earth Recordings, is every bit as wilfully weird as its title suggests and counts Mick Jagger amongst its admirers.
From the album we have a free download of ‘Wicked Wetdrop, Quonge & Me‘ as a little glimpse into the acid folk wordplay that inhabits this wonderfully bizarre LP.
