TANKUS THE HENGE – LAST NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS

Frontman Jaz Delorean and guitarist Tim Fulker dropped by in October around the release of their single ‘Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker’ and shorn of their usual brassy backing, played a stripped back set on accordion and guitar, which included unreleased track ‘Last Night In New Orleans’.

Reunited with their comrades, the full line-up will be heading out on tour this spring with for a five date jaunt including shows at The Folkish Festival in Poole and a closing show at The Garage in London.

PINEY GIR – GOLD RULESpineygir

Kansas songstress and long-time Joyzine fave Piney Gir was our first ever guest on the show way back in 2012 and made a long overdue return to the studio in April to play us some tracks from her new album mR hYDE’S wILD rIDE, including single ‘Gold Rules’.

The album received rave reviews for its catchy guitar pop tunes and was followed later in the year by a collection of her Halloween inspired tracks, including new tune ‘Ugly Bones‘ and a tour with Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes.  Piney kicks off 2016 with a show in Athens on 6th February.

THE INDELICATES – MEMORY DUET

The Indelicates released their astonishingly ambitious concept album Elevator Music, their fifth, in 2015 and popped by the studio to talk about it in July.  Telling the story of the internet developing consciousness, growing weary of humanity’s inane babble and jetting off into space, and accompanied by a series of virtual reality videos it was an album that set its sights high and blazed its own prog-tinged trail.

From the album, the band performed a stripped back rendition of ‘Memory Duet’, which you can hear below.

VIENNA DITTO – HAMMER & A NAILvienna ditto

It seemed like we’d been waiting an eternity, but in 2015 Joyzine’s favourite electro-jazz-sci fi-blues-surf duo Vienna Ditto finally released their debut album Circle, and it proved to be well worth the wait.

Hatty and Nigel made the trip to Croydon to play a few tracks from the LP, including a stripped back version of single ‘Hammer & A Nail’.

Vienna Ditto head out on the road over the coming months on a tour that will take them from Southampton to Inverness, including a brace of London shows at The Bird’s Nest in Deptford on 5th February and The Black Heart in Camden on 3rd March.

OH! GUNQUIT – FIREBALL OF LOVEohgunquit

Rumble-bop outfit Oh! Gunquit popped in for a session in July and shared tracks from their debut album Eat Yuppies & Dance, which came out on Dirty Water Records last year, and treated us to a live rendition of non-album track ‘Fireball of Love’.

The band release a new limited edition cassette next month through Burger Records affiliates Weiner Records, followed by a double A-side 7″ on Trash Wax Records in April featuring new songs ‘Nomads of the Lost’ and ‘Walking The Streets’, which were produced by Jim Diamond who has previously worked with The White Stripes, The Sonics, The Dirtbombs and The Detroit Cobras amongst many others.  They play their first shows of the year in Spain next month and are currently working on their second album.

BROKEN SOUNDTRACKS – DO YOU WRONGBroken Soundtracks 2

London quartet Broken Soundtracks were part of one of our favourite line-ups of 2015 when they played the Roadkill All-dayer at The Lock Tavern back in the summer.  They dropped by to play some tracks ahead of the show, including an acoustic version of ‘Do You Wrong’.

The band team up with Roadkill again for the launch party of Roadkill Records at The Lock Tavern on 5th March alongside fellow Joyzine faves Saint Agnes and The Sly Persuaders.  Their album, Born To Be Cruel is available now via Bandcamp.

COSMO HOUSE – HOWLIN’ IN THE SUNcosmohouse

Cosmo House were another band to perform at the all-dayer and blew us away with their powerful bluesy sound to such an extent that we invited them on as guests.  They duly obliged and treated us to a few live tracks which included the first recorded instance of flugelhorn being played in the Croydon Radio studio.  Check it out on this recording of ‘Howlin’ In The Sun’.

The band release their Frankenheart EP through Spiritual Records soon and begin work on its follow-up shortly.

STEPHEN EVENS – SHORTSstephenevens

Our paths crossed with Stephen Evens on many occasions during 2015, including live performances at Joyfest and the opening show of our To Hell With Good Intentions night in Croydon.  He also performed a superb live session on the show in October, during which he performed this rendition of live favourite ‘Shorts’.

Stephen releases his debut single ‘Evil Twin’ next week as a download via Bandcamp or on 1/4″ open reel tape for the fans of unusual analogue formats amongst you.  An album, Bonjour Poulet will follow later this year.  He plays Brixton Windmill on 26th January as part of Independent Venues Week.

BENBO – SHEEP ON DRUGS

Brixton based solo artist Benbo is a man of many talents: singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, visual artist, producer and independent record label boss; he’s pretty much a one-man music machine.

He recently dropped a new instrumental track, the wonderfully surreal ‘Nurvel Durd’, complete with a splendid and suitably odd video in which a little animated chap falls down a series of transformational holes.  A compilation of his 2015 projects, including collaborations with The Fatty Acids, Pablo and Alexandra Benedict is available now via Bandcamp, with his first album due in 2016.

Benbo visited the studio back in April ahead of the release of his debut EP, from which ‘Sheep On Drugs’ is taken.

ICONS OF ELEGANCE – EQUAL AMOUNTS (OF GUILT & PEACE)iconsofelegance

Henri of Finnish brotherly duo Icons of Elegance came to play some tracks from their latest album Lightships in June, including the gentle psyche-folk of ‘Equal Amounts (Of Guilt & Peace)’.

The band have since taken part in an intriguing project titled Secret Seventh with indie labels Alcopop! and Superfan 99 for which a series of sparkly red cassettes were released, each containing 6 listed tracks and a secret bonus 7th song.  50 tapes were made, each with a different 7th track, one of which was by the Icons themselves.  It doesn’t get much more limited edition than that!  The duo are currently working on new material with a single due later in the year.

EMILY MAGPIE – THE BOY WITH THE DARK EYESemilymagpie

Singer/songwriter Emily Magpie provided one of the highlights of 2015’s Croydon Radio Showcase events with her fragile ukulele & vocal songs, and dropped by the studio to perform a few tracks, including ‘The Boy With The Dark Eyes’.

She releases her self-produced debut EP Same Stuff in April, preceded by a series of London shows, including at Herne Hill’s Off The Cuff on 18th February, The New Cross Inn on 9th March and Ronnie Scott’s on 12th April.
