Video of the Day: Weaves ft. Tanya Tagaq – Scream

Today’s VotD sees a collaboration between two of our favourite Canadian artists: odd-pop quartet Weaves and Inuk art-punk throat singer Tanya Tagaq, and the resulting track is every bit as strange and wonderful as we could have hoped.

Taken from Weaves’ forthcoming second album Wide Open, released on 6th October through Memphis Industries, ‘Scream’ starts off innocently enough with an ascending riff somewhat akin to the sound effects used for a cartoon character sneaking up a flight of stairs, Jasmyn Burke’s husky vocal immediately adds a political layer from the first line “we are living in a time when misery is just common circumstance,” to topics of body image, capitalism, female solidarity and alienation; then Tagaq’s visceral echoing incantations kick in and everything goes bat-shit crazy in the best possible way.

Weaves are currently on tour, taking in dates in North America and Europe, including the following UK shows in November:

13th Cambridge, Portland Arms
14th Leicester, The Musician
15th Glasgow, King Tuts
16th Leeds, Oporto
17th Manchester, Eagle Inn
18th Newcastle, Think Tank
19th Birmingham, Hare & Hounds
20th Bristol, Crofters Rights
21st London, Oslo
22nd Brighton, Green Door Store
