Joyzine Is 15: 2003 Playlist

Throughout 2018 we’re celebrating 15 years since Joyzine first appeared online, and today we’re taking a trip down memory lane to our very first year with a selection of our favourite tunes from 2003.

Back in those days Joyzine ran more like an online version of a paper zine with monthly issues, the first of which was a Truck Festival special featuring interviews with Fonda 500, Black Nielson, M.A.S.S. and The Edible Five Foot Smiths, which can still be found online here.

Things really kicked into gear when we were introduced to the lovely people at Rocklands, and their South London Music Tourist Board at The Paradise Bar in New Cross – through their musical get-togethers we were introduced to many bands that would go on to be long-term Joyzine favourites, including Bloc Party, Art Brut and Chris T-T, and we got involved in their excellent Alternative Rock Idol shows, including producing the only paper edition of Joyzine and interviewing bands for a DVD of the event made by Digital Sneakers (my interview with Bloc Party can be seen here).  You can read about the shows here.

The year was rounded off with a best-of 2003 feature and today we’ve put together a playlist featuring some of our enduring favourites from the list, so put on your rose-tinted spectacles and enjoy the sound of 2003.
