Single Review: Calva Louise – Belicoso

‘Belicoso’ by Calva Louise is very satisfying and addictive but a bit too easy. Rather like cocaine (so I’m told).

So it’s always fun to have the opportunity to say what you think if you care enough to think it. Firstly, I wish they didn’t sound quite so processed on this release. It seems King Gizzard have perpetuated a distorted-drums trend that the producer Tarek Musa unfortunately doesn’t shy away from. Jess’ vocals on ‘Belicoso’ are also distorted, this is all a bit too easy – to achieve radio friendly angry punch and energy. Secondly, I do wish they changed key at some point in the song, particularly half way through the chorus.

I’m being harsh of course, there are many attributes to a band I’m very fond of. The synths are fun, there’s an amazing drum fill near the end and everything works powerfully. The musical intervals from major 3rd to minor 3rd to minor 2nd to tonic is satisfying and suits the anger/frustration at air pollution that I’m very in tune with. I’d sum up the song in your brain by merging Republica with Manu Chao.
