London trio Girls in Synthesis were to release their long awaited debut album Now Here’s An Echo From Your Future, in May on Harbinger Sound. However, due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, they have decided to delay the release of the LP until later in the year. However, you can pre-order the album HERE.
In the meantime, we can revel in the release of a new video to accompany the lead track on the ‘Winter Pressure’ 2019 Tour Single released November 15, 2019. ‘Pressure’ is a massive song and is a brilliant introduction to GIS. It is also track two on ‘Now Here’s An Echo From Your Future’ so forms an important part of the GIS catalogue. Uploaded to Youtube on 9th March 2020 just before the Coronavirus Lockdown, ‘Pressure’ is 1.54 of barely contained disappointment and frustration at the current state of Britain at the moment. The video itself is cobbled together with glitchy and fuzzy television interference, still and live footage of the band playing live, and the band ‘posing’ on brutalist architecture in their boiler suits.
The song starts with squealing feedback. The vocals are spoken and matter of fact. The feedback and noise continue throughout. This track is a great bass, guitar and drum barrage and is chaotic and frenetic right to the bitter fucking end. After watching/listening ‘Pressure’ and then seeking out the back catalogue of GIS, one realises they are hands down one of the UK’s best bands around at the moment.
Since forming in late 2016, Girls In Synthesis have quickly forged a fearsome reputation as one of the most exciting and volatile live acts in London. In equal parts frantic, considered, ear-splitting and melodic, the group take their cues from the early DIY punk and post-punk pioneers to keep everything in-house; artwork, videos, performances and recordings are created entirely by the group and their handful of trusted collaborators.
Sold out headline shows across the UK have led to frantic and chaotic performances, and packed, sweaty venues, the word is getting out and spreading rapidly. Catch GIS while you can and witness the rise of one of the UK’s most original and unique underground bands. They have been hand-picked to support acts as diverse as Damo Suzuki, Slaves, and Bad Breeding. The latter band being the nearest comparison I can think of. What a night you’d have with GIS and Bad Breeding! I can’t wait for their debut LP to be released as I can’t recommend this band enough.
Review by Ioan Humphreys
I love GIS. I saw them accidentally when I went to a Yassassin gig in 2017 and I’m afraid to say GIS blew them away. They played that show like the world was going to end the day after and I nearly got my head taken off by the bass player as they invaded the audience space on numerous occasions. I’ve since bought everything they’ve released and it fantastic to see them on Joyzine – and it’s an excellent review Ioan!
