What do you do if you’re three quarters of the way through recording your first single since an excellent (and somewhat underappreciated) second album, preparing to lay down the gang vocals that will provide the cherry on the cake, and the country is suddenly thrown into Covid-19 induced lockdown? If you’re Worcester power pop trio Hey You Guys!, the answer is to send a message out across the airwaves asking for volunteer backing singers to send their vocal takes to guitarist and production maestro Dave Draper. And so it came to pass that ‘Wolf’ features vocal talents ranging from Les ‘Fruitbat’ Carter of Carter USM, a man with a UK number one album and Glastonbury headline slot to his name, to Joyzine editor Paul Maps, who to the best of our knowledge has not.
The track is a full-on hi energy pop punk stomper, accompanied perfectly by a B-Movie inspired video that cuts footage of frontman (and occasional Joyzine contributor) Peter Richard Adams with grainy black and white scenes from 1942 genre flick The Mad Monster – the visual effects on both are equally impressive – and it is guaranteed to perk you up during this period of isolation.
‘Wolf’ is available as a digital download from Bandcamp now.
