Croydon indie-disco quartet Bugeye have been big favourites here at Joyzine for quite some time so we were delighted to hear towards the end of last year that they’d hooked up with Reckless Yes Records, home to the likes of Fightmilk, Chorusgirl, Captain Handsome and more who can often be found inhabiting these digital pages. The first fruits of their partnership have begun to emerge over the past few months and with their debut album Ready, Steady, Bang due for release on 10th July, we’re delighted to bring you a first listen to the latest single to be plucked from the album, ‘Blue Fire’.
Riding along on what is a quite frankly filthy bassline and packed with the sort of catchy floor-filling guitar and synth hooks that made us fall in love with them in the first place, Angela Martin’s vocal soaring above it all, ‘Blue Fire’ is sure to ignite the dancing feet of old and new fans alike, hell it’s even got a great cowbell section.
As is often the case with Bugeye, the sparkling sound is juxtaposed with darker lyrical content. Speaking of the track the band said “A lot of things don’t make sense at the moment. We can’t understand racism, or hatred for those that are different. These really shouldn’t be issues anymore but they still are. It’s crazy. I suppose what we understand more than ever about ourselves though, is the need to express what we feel and think through music, even if that is sharing our darkest moment.
“What is also important is our need to have fun with music and melody rather than everything being moody. We explore serious themes but our music is really quite the opposite of that. Fun and upbeat with a dark side.”
