The Joyzine Advent Calendar #2: 24 Days of Free Music Downloads – Brixton Hill Supergroup’s #saveourvenues take on ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’

The Advent Calendar got off to a stormer yesterday with exclusive new recordings from Piney Gir and MJ Hibbett (you can still find them here) and we are not taking our foot off the gas today, far from it – we have another exclusive, created by a supergroup of some our favourite musicians with the aim of raising some money for the Music Venue Trust’s #saveourvenues campaign, along with news of an auction of some absolutely incredible items aimed as saving one of the venues on the MVT’s red list.

As always, the tracks are completely free to to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the tracks (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but with the UK’s independent music venues in peril following almost a year of covid restrictions, we’d love you to make a donation to the Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues campaign if you enjoy these tracks. You can make a donation to the fund, or to a specific venue of your choice here.

Brixton Hill Studios has become an integral part of the South London music scene, a base for many of the bands that have been tickling the fancy of the UK’s music journos in recent years as well as for many more making their first tentative steps into the world of music. It’s also run by a thoroughly splendid bunch of people, many of whom are excellent musicians in their own right and, having seen the plight of the UK’s independent music venues, many of which (including their neighbours The Windmill) are under serious threat of closure following almost a year of covid-enforced restrictions, they’ve got together a group of their talented mates and recorded an astonishingly good (and Band Aid Trust approved) re-write of festive charity classic ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ – we’re delighted to bring you both the track and its video exclusively on Joyzine today.

Featuring the talents of the Brixton Hill Staff band, including members of Hot Sauce Pony, Hurtling, Real(s), Ham Legion and Stephen EvEns, along with vocal contributions from Brixton Hill Studio patrons including Jimbob from Carter USM, Charlotte from Madonnatron, Cassie Fox (I, Doris/Loudwomen) & The Foxes, Tiny from Ultrasound, Amber from Hadda Be (fka Foundlings) Andy and Chris from Death and The Penguin and more, ‘Save Our Venues’ is a rallying call to music fans everywhere (as well as being huge festive fun). We hope that, in the words of Bob Geldof, it inspires you to “Give us the fucking money” and donate to The Music Venue Trust‘s #saveourvenues fund.
