Project Blackbird’s new single ‘Laissons cela entre nous’ (essentially, ‘between us’) is a velvet hand wrapped in an iron glove and any track that starts with a blast of harmony horns that would make the inhabitants of Jericho nervous gets my attention. Jon Read must have a super-human embouchure to blow so true. He is not alone in bringing ear-catching accents to the track and where the horns are the reggae, reggae sauce that keep the engine room fire ablaze, there are bursts of guitar from Alan Roberts that would get a nod of approval from Steely Dan alumni Larry Carlton. Deep pan bass subtly undulates throughout and keeps everything locked together with Dave Tidmarsh’s drums and Hari Trivedi’s tabla trills. And all of this iron still allows space for the velvet of Ming Nagel’s voice to drift through the song like a summer’s zephyr. Notes are not forced and allow the beauty of the tune to shine through in a style that recalls French chanteuses like Françoise Hardy.
All in all, ‘Laissons cela entre nous’ is a track to whet the appetite for their forthcoming album If This Is the End which is released on March 11; an amuse-bouche that makes you eager for the main meal. This radio edit is currently free to own on Bandcamp, you just need to enter 0.00 in the track pricing you can spend the money you save on a digestif of Pernod and water.
