SINGLE REVIEW: NUDISTA – CONFESS

Nudista are a self-described indie-pop duo made up of guitarist Robbie Carman and Spanish-born singer Pilar Matji Cabello (Spanish people seem to have more than their fair share of fabulous names) and ‘confess’ is their new single release; out on the wonderful Sad Club Records.

For an indie-pop duo ‘confess’ inhabits the hazy warm hinterland that floats somewhere between pop and Americana. The backing acts like a cradle in which Matji Cabello can stretch out elongated vowels and bring a laconic melancholy to the song’s themes of the “overwhelming sensations of life, encased within a reassuring and familiar shell”. There are massive cliff-hanger chords for vocals to jump off and an echo of Cat Stevens ‘First Cut Is the Deepest’ (made famous by Rod Stewart). Robbie Carmen obviously understands how to surround Pilar Matji Cabello’s voice with just the write amount of support and also demonstrates the great skill of understanding of when to fall back and when to add a flourish.

‘confess’ has a chameleon quality that means it would work in an intimate smoky bar or could be dialled up to epic proportions if covered by a pop diva. Despite a sparse set of releases from Nudista since 2018 I really hope that ‘confess’ heralds an EP or album coming in the future.

LYRICS:

I’m growing old, I’m feeling tired

Another day goes with nothing to do

We go around as if we were alive

But we’ll only live when we die

I must confess that I don’t know the rules

I must confess I forgot what’s true

I try to take it day by day

But this solitude is making me sink

I always thought I’d be made up but

I don’t wanna make it anymore

I must confess that I don’t know the rules

I must confess I forgot what’s true

We are running over time

Hiding in the dark

I always try too hard

To save me, save me, save me, save me

I must confess that I don’t know the rules

I must confess I forgot what’s true
