SINGLE / VIDEO REVIEW: CHERYM – LISTENING TO MY HEAD

Melodrama, mayhem, murder, Marigolds, the video to CHERYM’s new single ‘Listening to my Head’ has it all. The band say: “the music video for Listening To My Head is a full on 5 star drama about Betty Broderick being mentally tortured by her lying, cheating husband of 20 years (Dan Broderick) until she one day snaps and murders Dan and his lover in cold blood….except we play all the characters, and have funny wigs to match. Of course, we don’t condone murder (!!!!!) but felt Betty’s story was one that needed to be told.”

And this mariticidal drama from kitchen sink to sinking feeling unfolds against another stellar kickass song from the Northern Irish trio who previously brought us ‘Kisses On My Card’ which I reviewed back in February. Whereas that was a trip through moodier country ‘Listening to my Head’ is a full tilt, sound barrier-breaking, Mach 1 rocket ride that crackles with bags of power-pop-punk energy. It’s hard not to imagine a post-COVID live gig that doesn’t have this song causing so much vociferous jumping up and down that first floor venues might end up on ground floor.
