SINGLE REVIEW: KEG- HEYSHAW

‘Heyshaw’ is the debut single from KEG who have just signed to stellar act-magnets Alcopop! Records. After bands with thrifty-threes and fab-fours, it’s refreshing to get a band with 7 members: Albert Haddenham (vocals), Joel Whitaker (bass) & Will Wiffen (synth), Frank Lindsay (guitar), Jules Gibbons (guitar), Charlie Keen (trombone & shell) and Johnny Pyke (drums).

KEG don’t spare the horses and you can hear every member of the band flexing muscles and throwing tics and spasms into the mix of this geography lesson based on Albert’s Mum’s family who moved around RAF bases from Kuwait, Kuala Lumpur to Driffield. It careens along like a V8 clown car or a controlled tumble down a hill, with drums so tight you couldn’t slide a cigarette paper between the beats, parp-slides of trombone (so good to hear trombone in indie music), a plate-drop of guitars, alien-computer synth wibble, and over the top (in both senses of the phrase) is Albert’s urgent voice with its geographic ululating. The overall effect is dizzying and people of a nervous disposition should look away before listening.

KEG are like a modern day slice of The Higsons (see ‘Where Have All The Club A-Go-Go’s Went Went’) or The Fire Engines (see ‘Get Up And Use Me’) and they are a righteous geometry set of angles and spiky compass points. I can’t wait to rummage in the pencil case of their forthcoming EP, out in October, and available to pre-save on all good streaming sites.

Heyshaw – lyrics:

Judy left with anne and Jeany

Heyshaw wont work no more

Alec and connie waved her off

The only road to Harrogate

Anne met Charles

Jeany met rick

Jeany was a nurse

Rick be fixing planes

Took her all over the world

Took her all over the world

Singapore!

Malaysia!

Kuwait!

Berlin!

Judy popped out paul and simon

George was a mechanic

Playing cricket on the green

Charles got a job with the council

Rick and Jean and tracey and Jack

Never took a step down south

Jacky started seeing jewels

Precious metals and stones

Singapore!

Malaysia!

Kuwait!

Berlin!

Jackie took a trip back east

Smelling like old patchouli

Never could get with that spirit

Never could stomach that rubbish

East

Riding

The place

For us

Took her all over the world

Took her all over the world

Singapore!

Malaysia!

Kuwait!

Berlin!
