‘Whatever Happened, It’s Alright Now’ is a bouncy, feel-good, synth-pop song by indie band, SUNS UP. Think Owl City meets Foster the People with a gallon of sunshine poured on top. It’s a happy track, that reflects on the fact that time heals all. It has the true summer vibe, dreamy, and a bit of a classic. It is one of those songs that you want to hear live as soon as you switch it on.
The band is fronted by vocalist David Kelly, Sam Salkeld is the guitar and the drums are all Matt Wagstaff. The trio have been together since 2019 and have had a lot of success. They have been featured in Atwood Magazine, Huw Stephens, BBC 1 and BBC Introducing amongst others. This release might be the start of something big for them as they have a much-awaited UK tour coming up in a few months.
SUNS UP were back on home ground in Sussex during lockdown, which is what inspired this hot summer track. Rekindled old memories and reflections on how things are now were sparked up. The lyrics,
“Lights out.
Doors Closed.
Not coming home,”
relate to that feeling when you’re in a relationship that isn’t working but you try anyway because you feel like you should. Only to realise, after time has passed that leaving was the best thing for both of you and ‘It’s alright now’. It’s also a nod towards getting older, how your emotions change and develop and how hindsight truly is a bit of a know-it-all.
SUNS UP said of the track:
“I think it’s a phase that a lot of people go through where you’re really trying to make things work, but you feel like you’re going round in circles. It’s okay for relationships to need work, and it’s important you can look back together and say ‘Whatever Happened, It’s Alright Now’.”
For such summer dance-pop song, the lyrics are quite sad. But when combined with the hoppy guitar riffs and Wagstaff’s upbeat drumming, it’s easy to get swept up and just dance those blues away.
‘Whatever Happened, Its Alright Now’ is out on 20th August 2021 in single and EP. Produced by Gethin Pearson (JAWS) and Max Marlow via. Runway Records. Get your hands on it here.
