Album Premiere: John Dwyer, Ryan Sawyer, Greg Coates, Wilder Zoby & Andres Renteria – Gong Splat

Tomorrow sees the release of a new collaboration between Ryan Sawyers (At The Drive-In) on drums, Greg Coates on upright bass, Wilder Zoby (Run The Jewels) on synth and mellotron, Andres Renteria (Blank Blue) on conga, bongos & hand percussion and John Dwyer (Osees) on guitar, synths, pan flute, cuica, hand percussion, space drum and effects.

Forty minutes of fried psych-jazz improvisation bursting with funk, exploding with sci-fi sounds and taking many a detour into realms far beyond the usual genre labels, it’s at turns fascinating, blissed out, urgent and compelling, with an unexpected change of direction never too far off in the distance.

It’s the second such recording Dwyer has been involved in, following the release in January of Witch Egg, recorded with Nick Murray, Brad Caulkins, Tom Dolas and Greg Coates. “Gong Splat is a sort of sister record to Witch Egg,” explains Dwyer. “Fried, improvised fusion recorded at home over the course of a few super relaxed days in the middle of a world in torment. Triple synthesizers, guitar, double bass and percussion for days. Enjoy some spontaneous music before the wolf chews through the door!

Gong Splat is available to order on ‘Golden Dollop’ limited edition vinyl, black vinyl and CD via Castle Face Records, and we’re delighted to give you the chance to hear it in full on Joyzine today:
