Los Angeles punk singer-songwriter Kate Clover is set to release her debut album this Spring, and to get us suitably excited ahead of the LP, today she unveils a new single – her take on well loved classic. With influences including home town heroes X, Germs and Gun Club, along with US punk legends Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, you might be expecting something loud, spiky and abrasive, but instead she’s turned her gaze on Nancy Sinatra’s sixties pop banger ‘These Boots Are Made for Walkin”, adding a layer of cold-hearted malice to the original’s retro beehive swing.
The track features backing vocals from Warren Thomas of The Abigails, one of a number of collaborations on the new record, which also include Crocodlies’ Brandon Welchez and Davila 666, and it comes with a tassle-tastic video of Kate and Warren taking a country bar karaoke night by storm.
“The cover was produced by Gregg Foreman (Cat Power, Delta 72, The Gossip) and Brandon Welchez (Crocodiles),” Clover explains. “[It] was heavily influenced by Suicide, Primal Scream and the Gun Club. I wanted to create a song that sounded as if Suicide produced a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song but make it my own. The song is a duet with Warren Thomas, lead singer and founder of The Abigails who specialize in their own unique brand of Outlaw Country.”
We’re delighted to bring you the first chance to hear it and see the video here on Joyzine today.
Kate Clover’s debut album is due for release in Spring 2022. Her 2021 Channel Zero EP is available now on all of the usual streaming platforms.
