Much-loved, sound-pounding, smoko-infused Australian punks, The Chats are back with their sublime new single ‘Out on the Street’.

If you aren’t familiar with The Chats, they rose to fame after their track ‘Smoko’ went viral alongside the official Smoko video which their bassist made for just $5 back in 2017. If you were at a party that year – then chances are you watched this video through blinding tears of laughter – a few hundred times. It’s an internet classic and a worldwide sensation.

The Chats are a three-piece punk band, with Eamon Sandwith on bass and vocals, Josh Hardy – guitar and Matthew Boggis on drums. They play punk with a comedic twist, besides the seriousness and dedication it takes to organise these tours (and release records via their own label – Bargain Bin Records). Their songs, videos and lyrics are usually barmy, riotous and a stark contrast to seriousness. ‘Out on the Street’ is a little different.

Out on the Street – The Chats. Official Video – Maclay Heriot

‘Out on the Street’ is track 12 of 13 songs on their new album ‘Get Fucked’. The track is noisy, energetic punk-rock, and also full of vibes as soon as you read the lyrics;

“You wouldn’t listen to any of us
You couldn’t accept defeat
Couldn’t take it without makin’ a fuss

Now you’re out on the street
Out on the-“

It seems to tell a story of someone who hit hard times and whose friends kept trying to help and just want them to be alright. Whatever the back story, the seriousness of the lyrics shows a deeper side to this zesty punk trio.

The accompanying official video was filmed by Maclay Heriot who captured footage from The Chats’ USA part of their tour last year. It shows clips from Santa Cruz Beach, a super refreshing lazy river, Coachella, and numerous snippets from what look to be excellently fun gigs in multiple sold-out venues.

Check out the full album ‘Get Fucked’ (which is my favourite album so far this year) now available on all good streaming sites or to buy on their website.
