The Joyzine Advent Calendar – 24 Days of Free Music Downloads #3: LOUD Women + Killdren

On the Joyzine Advent Calendar we’re giving away free downloads of tracks by artists that we love (including plenty of exclusives and a fair few festive favourites) every day until Christmas Eve on what, as far as we’re aware (and we’re always happy to be corrected), is the longest running such calendar on the web.

As always, the tracks are completely free to download and there’s no need to sign up to any mailing lists to access the songs (though if you’d like to you can join ours here), but if you’re enjoying the tunes we’d love you to make a donation to the wonderful charity Child Poverty Action Group, who work on behalf of the more than one in four children currently growing up in poverty in the UK by providing support to families navigating the social security system, taking legal action to challenge unjust decisions and campaigning for change. You can make a donation on this link.

For day 3 we’re teaming up with our friends at LOUD WOMEN, a fantastic not-for-profit initiative for all those who support putting women on stage, and turning up the volume. As well as their excellent website, newsletter and regular gigs, they run an annual festival (check out our review of this year’s event here) and today release the fifth volume of their LOUD WOMEN compilation album, featuring a host of Joyzine favourites including Petrol Girls, Deux Furieuses, Bis, Bugeye, I, Doris and many more besides, with all profits going to the Musicians Defend Ukraine Charity Foundation.

For today’s window they’re sharing a track from the album by rave punks Killdren, which you can download free below – we caught up with LOUD WOMEN founder Cassie Fox to find out more about what they’ve been up to in 2022.

What have you been up to in 2022?

LOUD WOMEN has had a great year – some excellent gigs with fave bands like ARXX, Lambrini Girls, Fraulein and Deux Furieuses. We’ve been lucky enough to host some wonderful touring bands too – like War on Women from Baltimore, and HotKid from Toronto. And our annual festival was bigger than ever – a two-dayer at Amersham Arms! We also ran a really fun open mic night earlier in the year, and hope to do that again soon. My band I, Doris had an amazing summer – we played Rebellion’s R-Fest and got to hang out with heroes like Billy Bragg and Squeeze. Busy lives have meant we’ve not done much in the way of releasing new music lately, however we do have an exciting new single out 9 Dec – ‘Does Your Girlfriend Know You’re Here?’ – and there’s a meme-tastic video coming with it, so stay tuned to your internets for that one. The single also appears on the new LOUD WOMEN Volume 5 compilation – which is out 3 Dec, with all profits going to Musicians Defend Ukraine. There are 24 tracks on the album (CD and download!) – from Austrian hardcore punk Petrol Girls, and 90s indiepopstars Bis, through electropop Ukrainian protest artists Bjelle & Krapka, and soul sisters Deuxes, to rave punks Killdren. Something to suit all ears! https://loudwomen.bandcamp.com/album/loud-women-volume-5

What do you have planned for next year?

There are some exciting plans afoot at the moment with a European collaboration – I can’t reveal the details just yet but it’s gonna be amazing! As well as our usual regular gigs at the Hope & Anchor (2nd Saturday of the month) we’ll have some special one-offs, like 16 March we’ll be hosting The Franklys’ album launch at the Lexington. And then of course in September it will be LOUD WOMEN Fest 7 – and I can exclusively reveal to the readers of the wonderful Joyzine that it will be 16 September 2023 at Rich Mix in Shoreditch! Band applications open shortly at https://loudwomen.org/fest/

What can you tell us about today’s track?

Killdren are absolute heroes of the DIY scene – the band who angered Daily Mail readers so much they got kicked off a Glastonbury lineup, because of their anti-Tory music! This track is ‘Expect a Crimewave’ and it went down a treat when they performed it at LOUD WOMEN Fest this September. I know they’re hosting a fab gig in London 17 December – tickets here https://bit.ly/kdwinter22 – also featuring our good friends T-Bitch.

What makes the perfect Christmas song?

Dingdong bells and super-schmaltz! Giddy up, jinglehorse …
