‘Vinterens Vinde’ (Winter Winds) is the beautiful new single from Ea Wim, a Nordic neoclassical composer in a genre that has barely any female representation in her native Denmark (or anywhere else for that matter). It’s the first release from her forthcoming album Vårdåb. The song was written whilst living in Iceland in the winter of 2022 and Wim says of the track:
“I was very unhappy about the choice I had made about moving there all alone. I thought I was going to have the time of my life and had dreamed about living in Iceland since I saw the music video to “Perth” by Bon Iver when I was 12 years old. It seemed like the stars had aligned when I got into Iceland University of the arts, but the school was a huge disappointment. Another international student and I ended up in a big draining conflict with the school that took all my energy. I had never felt more alone in my life. Besides that, it was also the hardest winter they had for many years, with a meter of snow and a storm once a week.
It was in great contrast to the life I came home to in Denmark during the school breaks, where I was surrounded by friends and family and there was nothing that was hard. The last months I was in Iceland were pure survival and the only thing that kept me up was the thought of coming back to Denmark for the summer and being surrounded by people I love.”
There is incredible beauty held in the tension between the melancholy and the hope ‘Vinterens Vinde’ projects. The harp, and light touch of the string arrangement, kick up an icy swirl around Wim’s exceptional voice, a voice which walks the line between the power and clarity of opera and the emotive power of singers like Björk or Agnes Obel. The song may look to the hope brought by spring , but it also brings me high hopes for the forthcoming album Vårdåb.

Vinterens Vinde Lyrics:
Vinterens vinde synger /Vinter winds sings
Sneen falder i dynger / the snow falls in heaps
En vinter søvn jeg aldrig fik / A winter sleep I never got
Det hvidt for mit indre blik / It is white for my inner eye
Inderligt jeg længes / Sincerely I long
Efter hvor men / After where but
Inderligt jeg længes / Sincerely I long
Efter hvor men / After where but
Det bliver forår igen / It will be spring again
Det bliver lyst igen / It will be light again
Det bliver sommer igen / It will be summer again
Du holder om mit håndled / You hold my wrist
Mens vinteren vare ved / While winter lasts
Udstrakte hænder bølger omkring mig / Outreaching hands wave around me
Mine øjne bliver klare som glas / My eyes become clear as glass
Jeg ser skyggerne brænde / I see the shadows burn
Jeg ser dig krystal klart / I see you crystal clear
Mærker solen i mit ansigt for første gang / Feeling the sun on my face for the first time.
Inderligt jeg længes / Sincerely I long
Efter hvor men / After where but
Inderligt jeg længes / Sincerely I long
Efter hvor men / After where but
Det bliver forår igen / It will be spring again
Det bliver lyst igen / It will be light again
Det bliver sommer igen / It will be summer again
Det bliver sommer igen / It will be summer again
Det bliver sommer igen / It will be summer again
