I reviewed Gdansk81‘s ‘Star of the Sea’ EP back in March last year, but this new release (their fourth self released EP) seems to take the band to another level. Out on 24th March, ‘Entropy of Scriptures’ displays a confidence touring with The Chameleons would surely justify.
Often filed alongside the likes of The Wedding Present, The Fall, and The B-52s (actually I did that myself previously), I’m now going to add The Jesus and Mary Chain to the list.
Opener ‘3×3’ kicks things off and lodges itself straight into your head. ‘You will never leave him, so don’t suggest it, we’ll just kiss between the lines…‘
‘Beckii Sweetheart’ is some kind of gritty, frantic, mildly frightening love song. The chorus delivers a surprise with some fabulous contrasting vocals.
‘I’m In Love With a Girl Who Looks Like A Girl That I Hate’ might have a title resembling The Freshies classic (do not be tempted to fall down a Frank Sidebottom rabbit hole at this point, I lost two hours), but there the similarities end. “Something about your face. You look like someone I hate.” I imagine this might be a troublesome feeling, as the track conveys masterfully.
‘Tatty Head’ rounds off the EP in a melancholy way to begin with, before breaking into something much more worthy of a closer.
As Frank would say… Fantastic!
