Album Review: Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers- I Love You

‘I Love You’ is the much anticipated debut album from Australian rockers Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. I was lucky enough to catch them live earlier this year, and I could tell that despite not having enough music then to fill a complete set, that they are destined for great things. The small pub I went to was jam packed, and everybody already seemed to already know the words to the songs. I have seen their name come up positively across many media outlets, and their songs being listed on prominent Spotify playlists. This is a band who have truly created a buzz.

‘I Love You’ is a great first full length from Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers which truly showcases the whole range they are capable of. There is of course, the catchy bangers we’ve come to know and love, like ‘Lights Out’ which is a full on rock singalong. Then there is also a softer side explored, such as on songs ‘Backseat Driver’ which is a rock ballad, or ‘Never Saw It Coming’ with the lyric ‘I left your bedroom with half of me still left in there’.

My personal highlights are title track ‘I Love You’ which is an awesome pop rock track that gets punkier as it builds up, that is about self sabotage- the chorus is ‘I love you, I really love you, do you mind if i ruin it, blow it up like I always do?’ ‘Kissy Kissy” another upbeat rock song which climaxes into a singalong part that I can really imagine being a live favourite, and ‘Treat Me Better’ is another favourite. A special mention goes to ‘Cayenne Pepper’ which at only 40 seconds is the heaviest track on the album, and I wish it was longer!

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have got catchy singalong rock songs down to a tee, and for me that is what I liked best about this album. So many of the songs just seem made for performing live for the full experience. They can just as well do soft and tender too if that is more your thing. Apparently this album had all of the band members take lead song writing duties at various points and that has most certainly been a big benefit to this album. Lyrical content is not only very singalong-able but covers relatable topics like feeling anti social, and toxic relationships.
