SINGLE REVIEW: OLIVE GRINTER – MAYBE IT’S TIME

Olive Grinter’s new single ‘Maybe It’s Time’ is a reflection on relationships and how they end, and from the sigh that opens the track it feels like Olive is singing directly to the listener. Olive told Joyzine “‘Maybe It’s Time’ ponders on the space between relationships. It’s about making time for myself and working on feeling grounded in my own company.

It is hard to do very little in a song but Olive Grinter has the kind of transfixing voice that requires minimal accompaniment and the song, far from feeling incomplete, is perfect as it is. It also means that when the harmonies come in towards the end of the song it’s like moving from black and white to technicolour.

The theme of carrying on beyond heartache is universal and Olive lets the vulnerability of the subject matter show in her voice. There is a perfectly imperfect quality to the singing which acts like craquelure on a painting; you can feel the emotional cracks but they never detract from the melancholy beauty that comes through.

The good news is that a debut album is coming in 2024 and although Olive Grinter may not be a well-known name at the moment but on the strength of this track I feel this will soon change.

LYRICS:

Your sweetness is divine
And you creep around inside my mind
Im not sure what you will find
Waiting there, on the stair to my thoughts

But I’ve been here before, I’ve knocked at the door
Waited to be let in, only to be let down again

There’s a line between alone and lonely
I waited for a sign to come and show me
Maybe there’s more, maybe I’ve found a little space inside me
Where I can be with myself, and no one else

But I’ve been here before, I’ve knocked at the door
Waited to be let in, only to be let down
I have been here before, I’ve knocked at the door,
Waited to be let in, only to be let down again

To be let down again, again, again

Maybe it’s time, maybe it’s time to go outside
Take a deep breath, bask in the sun and close my eyes

I’ll let it all go cus no one knows what the future holds
And time keeps moving, moving, moving, moving on
Time keeps moving, moving, moving, moving on
Time keeps moving, moving, moving, moving on

But I’ve been here before, I’ve knocked at the door
Waited to be let in, only to be let down
I have been here before, I’ve knocked at the door,
Waited to be let in, only to be let down again

Again, again, again
