It’s December, which round these parts means it’s time once again for The Joyzine Advent Calendar! This year we’re celebrating our 20th edition, so we’ve scoured the archives to mix in some calendar classics along with a few fresh festive cuts from our favourite artists.
As always every track on the calendar will be absolutely free to download, and we don’t force you to sign up for our mailing list (though you can if you want, here) or hand over all of your personal data. The calendar is our Christmas gift to the world (or at least the part of it that enjoys seasonal songs by obscure indie musicians), but if you’re also in the giving mood we’d love you to make a donation to our chosen cause, the excellent anti-racism charity HOPE not hate, which you can do here.

Today’s free festive download was one of the highlights of our 2021 edition of the advent calendar, a Christmas nightmare written and recorded specially for us by Dead Horse, who include amongst their number Kevin Lennon, formerly of Joyzine faves Love Buzzard, and Duncan Clark who designed our wonderful magpies logo (and the 20th birthday update version of it you see atop your screen when you current visit us). We caught up with Duncan to find out what 2024 holds in store for Dead Horse.
What have you been up to this year and what have you got planned for 2024?
So this year’s been a bit of a quiet one, but we do have a new single and video coming out in Jan 2024. Then our plan for next year is to get back over to Bristol to record a new EP with a little tour for that.
Tell us about your track
This track was recorded for the 2021 advent calendar. A little improvised number recorded live at Gunfactory studios onto Kev’s cassette 4-track.
This year Joyzine has been celebrating our 20th birthday – what were you up to in 2003?
2003 we were all in year 11 so I guess just about to do our GCSEs. That would have been the year Josh and I started our first band together actually. That’s pretty terrifying to realise.
