SINGLE REVIEW: COBBLED MOTH & THE HAPPY SOMETHINGS – WHAT I’VE FOUND

You would think that when two lo-fi artists collaborate they might cancel each other out (in the way noise cancelling headphones work) but thankfully when self-proclaimed “unintentionally retro, effortlessly uncool” band The Happy Somethings added their scuffed charm to Cobbled Moth’s song ‘What I’ve Found’ a wonky delight was created.

In The Happy Something’s X-announcement they say “We did this with Cobbled Moth – his song with him on vocal & acoustic guitar. We kind of hijacked it & became his spontaneous uninvited backing band! Fortunately, he didn’t mind.” Cobbled Moth said in response, “What I found is that it sounds exactly as I want, even though I didn’t know exactly what I wanted.

The track is rickety-lush blues with a massive acoustic guitar that acts like a bouncy castle for the vocals which jump between taut urgency and woozy falsetto. Lo-fi auteurs, tireless supporters of new music and all-round lovely people, The Happy Somethings, have wrapped the song up in dreamy backing harmonies and some velvet slide guitar, with the whole effect sitting somewhere between Syd Barrett, the La’s and Wreckless Eric.

You can follow Cobbled Moth, and hear his other collaborations, on his SoundCloud page, and I would encourage you to check out The Happy Somethings extensive catalogue which, apart from CDs, is available for free (or name your price) on their Bandcamp page.
