SINGLE REVIEW: CHERRY SERAPH – LUCKY CIGARETTE

Cherry Seraph has been putting out tracks since early 2023 when they released two tracks: the major/minor electropop swirl of ‘self destruct’ and the hazy synth-washes of the more melancholy ‘watch you blur’. This was followed by a number of live shows in Paris, Sheffield and Sofar Sounds in Leeds which meant we had to wait until this year for a new single. ‘lucky cigarette’ was worth the wait.

As I have said in a previous review Cherry Seraph avoids making overly sweet music and that goes for ‘lucky cigarette’ which treads on clouds as it wrestles with the self-doubt that can threaten to derail a relationship. Its gentle undulation is built on a glitchy percussive backdrop while multiple vocal lines skate effortlessly over electronic shimmer. Cherry Seraph says of the track:

“Everything within ‘lucky cigarette’ has a sonic purpose, and this includes the insertion of my saxophone midway through the track. I’ve spent a long time away from using I suppose what people may call more ‘traditional’ instruments in my production. The song being an extension of ‘watch you blur’ is interesting, because it’s as though I’ve finally come back around to myself, yet I’m equally entirely changed.”

On the strength of the three releases so far I hope that an EP or album is in the works and I feel confident that 2024 is going to be a pivotal year for this rising star.
