Karl Vento’s debut solo album Rainbow lights was one of my favourite albums of 2022 and, since it’s release, Karl has been playing full band and solo shows to support it including SXSW in 2023. He’s returning there this year to play on the 14th of march at Stephen F´s Bar and Terrace at 10pm.
Joyzine has been given the pleasure of premiering an acoustic version of his track ‘Iris Wind’ recorded for the I Love Sweden website which is run by Valerie, a French vlogger, who loves all things Swedish. She set the site up to “showcase Swedish artists, and make people discover bands they never heard of and would never have if they don’t live in Sweden“. Karl had been aware of site from performing live sessions for them with Anna von Hausswolff and Det Stora Monstret so approached Valerie to offer a session of his solo work.
The clip is filmed in the foyer of Gothenburg’s Konserthus in front of Sweden’s largest tapestry from 1936 with patterns by Sven X-et Erixson (1899-1970), woven by Barbro Nilsson (1899-1983) and six other weavers. The man with his gaze directed at the dancer is said to be the artist himself and the fair-haired boy just behind, his son.
Karl says ‘Iris Wind’ is about trying to “capture the feeling of light reaching through darkness and changing perspective on a painful event.”
Below is the track ‘Pearly Gates’ taken from Rainbow Lights which is available through Bandcamp.
