SINGLE REVIEW: HANNYA WHITE – SILVER COWBOY

‘Silver Cowboy’ is the new release from the challenging and compelling artist Hannya White who uses sound collage and electronics to create her work. Here she has crafted her own unique take on the idea of the lone cowboy out on the range. Cole Porter wrote “Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above. Don’t fence me in” (‘Don’t Fence Me In’, 1944) and White is a songwriter in no danger of being corralled by convention.

Hannya White’s tracks sit in a Venn diagram between contradictory and contrary with her sound-art feeling both unfinished and fully formed. This is liminal electronica where White is an antenna picking up a multitude of signals – AM, FM, Russian number stations, static, messages from outer space, and anything that falls between – shaping them into what she calls her “captivating soundscapes“.

White says, “the repeated “Peng, peng, peng” and imagery of a gun suggest a battle for agency and self-expression. The silver symbolism hints at a quest for purity amidst chaos. Ultimately, the song celebrates the courage to forge one’s path and assert one’s identity despite societal pressures. Reaching and longing.

This may be Hannya White’s sonic tribute to the cowboy, but this high plains drifter is definitely more Dada than Eastwood.
