I have to be honest and admit, I’m always a bit wary of reviewing singles. I always find there’s more to say when there’s a whole album or EP of music. But sometimes I hear a single, and immediately know I need to share this music, especially new bands that people probably haven’t heard of yet.
Pythies are a French trio who self describe as ‘Witchy Grunge Feminists’- so basically that description alone was enough to make me like this band. Even the title of this single- ‘Eclipse’ is pretty witchy. In divine and spooky timing – only recently we have had a Full Moon with a Lunar Eclipse, and it’s not too long until we also have a solar eclipse (April 8th- for any other witchy folk who might be reading this).
‘The song itself is full on rock with frantic guitars and a catchy chorus. The song was written last year around the lunar eclipse in October by lead singer Lise L. The intention was to mix riot grrrl, astrology and a 90s feel- another 3 of my favourite things- can this band and this song get any better? The answer to that would be yes, as the song reaches a peak and goes into full on witchy jam mode- accumulating in to a spooky shouty threat ‘Eclipse, Eclipse is coming for you!’
If I haven’t convinced you yet to check Pythies out, here is there intro- ‘If the Delphi oracles don’t speak to you, maybe three chicks screaming about how they despise patriarchy would do it. And if that’s not your thing, you will at least be moshing. Carried by dissonant and grunge melodies, Pythies draws you into all of the underground feminist and esoteric culture that you adore.’ – if this intro doesn’t make you swoon, we can’t be friends!
This is a band I will be watching very closely as I adore them already, and I am very excited to hear more from this witchy feminist trio.
