SINGLE REVIEW – SUDAKISTAN – MACHINE

I am forever grateful to Sudakistan as they are the band that brought me to the PNKSLM record label when their track ‘Concrete Djungle’ appeared on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. It made me sit bolt upright and had to grab my phone to look at who on earth was making this cell-vibrating psych-garage noise. Since then, I have bought everything PNKSLM has ever released and seen Sudakistan many times, including their fast and furious performance at 2023’s PNKSLM 10th anniversary concert in Stockholm.

‘Machine’ is the band’s first release in five years and features a tweaked line-up with guitarist Fredrik Hollsten-Martinez (Kerosene Kream) joining core trio Michell Serrano (vocals/guitar), Maikel Gonzalez (bass/vocals) and Juan Jose Espindola (drums & percussion). The five years have not seen their energy levels wane and ‘Machine’ is a frenetic sprint that combines low rider bass lines that jackhammer along with the relentless drums that occasionally get jumped by a conga-attack. While this assault is going on it’s the molten glass guitar line and one-note-power-vocal that sear their way through the falling masonry of the backing.

This track about a capitalist dystopia let the world know that Sudakistan are back with a bang and still sound like they are screaming at a world on fire to wake up and act.
