Album Review: Millie Manders and the Shut Up- Wake Up, Shut Up, Work

I first discovered Millie Manders and the Shut Up last October when I reviewed their single “Shut Up.” Since then, I have delved deeper into their influences and experience in the music industry through a “10 Questions” interview with Millie in April. By May, I had the pleasure of experiencing their live performance, which was nothing short of spectacular. Naturally, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review their second album, “Wake Up, Shut Up, Work.”

The album did not disappoint. It boasts an eclectic mix of genres, ensuring its appeal to a wide audience. Ska is prominently featured in tracks like “Fun Sponge” and the irresistibly catchy “One That Got Away.” Rap elements are also present, particularly in “Windows” and my personal favorite, “Can I Get Off?” While the album maintains an overall upbeat tone, it also includes tracks like “Halloween” that slow down the pace, providing a well-rounded listening experience.

What I truly love about Millie Manders and the Shut Up’s music is that, despite its often “fun” surface, it addresses significant issues. “Me Too” tackles sexism and body autonomy, while “Threadbare” touches on poverty with poignant lyrics like “I feel weak, I can’t afford to eat.” “Can I Get Off?” explores topics such as the war in Palestine and the rise of the far-right, showcasing the band’s willingness to confront difficult subjects.

Millie Manders and the Shut Up are more than just a band; they are activists, and their passion is palpable, especially during their live shows. Their music is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, making them a standout in the industry. In these challenging days, with so much hatred and fear going on in the world, we need bands like Millie Manders and the Shut Up who are not afraid to stand up for peace and justice.

‘Wake Up, Shut Up, Work’ is out now and you can get it on their website.
