SINGLE REVIEW: LEG PUPPY 2.0 – PHONE TWAT

Leg Puppy have recently rebooted themselves as Leg Puppy 2.0. Their operating system has been given an upgrade and they are now working at optimal efficiency with a shiny new interface and without AI to muddy their creative waters.

Having previously taken aim at streaming services, online gambling and the selfie generation the band have once again grabbed the zeitgeist by the scruff of the neck and given it a good shake to try and make it come to its senses. The target of their post-modern ire this time is the ‘Phone Twat’. We’ve all experienced it; you’re minding your own business on public transport when someone answers their phone with the caller booming out of a tinny loudspeaker, and starts an asinine conversation that no one can escape without noise cancelling technology. This is the unnatural evolution from the one-sided-phone-shout that started in the noughties, as parodied by Dom Joly as ‘The Big Phone Guy‘.

The song is a low brooding electronic prowl and Leg Puppy know how to layer their synths to create an unsettling landscape for the listener; something that perfectly reflects their dystopian take on the world. The lyrics might not grace literature prize shortlists, but I have no doubt they’ll resonate with plenty of people who will nod their agreement to lines like “headphones, headphones buy a pair of headphones, no one wants to hear your boring chat. Phone Twat” and “Volume high, a disregard for space. Your ignorance is in my face“. The lyric video pays homage to Peter Saville’s 1978 poster for The Haçienda containing the apt message “USE HEARING PROTECTION”.

‘Phone Twat’ is taken from their EP Rise of the Phone Twat which gathers up some previous tracks taking pots shots at Twitter and selfie-sticks and also includes some remixes including this version of ‘Selfie Stick’ by DP34.
