VIDEO PREMIERE: PINEY GIR – WITCHES & COVENS

Piney Gir is a longstanding friend of the Joyzine family. We’ve been featuring her music in these digital pages for a lot of our 20 year history so much so that she is more like a beloved sister or favourite cousin, and we know that her voice is as warm and friendly as the woman herself. So, we are very happy to have been given the opportunity to premiere the video to ‘Witches & Covens’ on our site.

And what a video it is. In a world where the dazzle of CGI can offer images only constrained by our imaginations it’s a delight to see that stop motion animation never goes out of fashion. There’s something wonderful about how the painstaking process of move>click>move> has a simple honest charm that CGI often struggles match. The video was made by Rhys Williams of the Williams Brothers Creative mixing stop frame with other animation, and it’s hard not to fall hard for ‘Hamster Roly’ and my particular favourites, the googly-eyed fluff-domes at the start of the video (toy manufacturers take note). The video was based on Williams’ doodles and animations with inspirations ranging from Trap Door to The Royle Family.

The song is gently buoyant and reflects on “unresolved pain and betrayal” which Piney says is her “‘embracing the darkness’ track, because sometimes you just gotta go dark for a bit“, but the ultimate message is that “if we put good feelings into the universe, the universe will give them back.” It has soporific charm, and the ebb and flow of the arrangement is a perfect foundation for the melancholy honey of Piney Gir’s vocals.

Piney Gir’s Cosmic Upside Down EP is released on Friday 30 August and Piney will be celebrating the EP’s release with a special show at The Lexington on 1st September, with support from Parentheses Dot Dot Dot & Charley Stone – find tickets here.
