Live Review: L1NKN P4RK/Our Nameless Boy/Bloomtide at Chinnerys, Southend

With all the recent buzz surrounding Linkin Park and their somewhat controversial return with a new singer, it felt like the perfect moment to attend a Linkin Park tribute band’s performance. Every now and then, I enjoy catching a good tribute band, especially when it involves a band whose music holds a nostalgic place in my heart. Linkin Park’s debut album, Hybrid Theory, instantly takes me back to my college days, where it was the soundtrack to countless memories. In fact, I hadn’t listened to the album in quite some time, but leading up to this gig, I revisited it and was reminded of just how powerful it still is.

The show took place at Chinnerys, a venue I’ve frequented many times over the years. It’s long been the go-to spot for live gigs in my hometown of Southend, and I’ve seen some incredible acts there. But I had never seen a tribute band—or even an independent act—sell out the venue like this one did. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the last time I remember seeing Chinnerys this packed was when I saw The Klaxons there many years ago.

Coming straight from work, I unfortunately missed the start of Bristol-based Bloomtide’s set. From what I gathered, they played a mix of alternative rock, which wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, but the crowd seemed to enjoy it well enough.

Next up was Our Nameless Boy, a band inspired by the US alternative scene. Their performance featured epic, sprawling jams that blended elements of prog rock with emo, metal, and rock.

Finally, it was time for the headliners: L1NKN P4RK. Despite the venue being so crowded that getting a decent view was nearly impossible, the sound quality was excellent throughout. From the moment they began, it was clear that they were committed to recreating the full Linkin Park experience. The band nailed the mix of old-school classics (perfect for nostalgic millennials like myself) and more recent tracks from the band’s catalog, including songs from the era just before we tragically lost original singer Chester Bennington.

One of the most intriguing moments of the night came when they performed a rendition of The Emptiness Machine, a track featuring a female vocalist. This was a bold move, given the ongoing debate among Linkin Park fans about the band’s decision to continue with a new singer. The crowd’s reaction to this was mixed. Some fans embraced the new material and danced along as enthusiastically as they had to the older hits, while others stopped dancing, shaking their heads in disapproval. It was as if, for a moment, the tribute band became the real Linkin Park, and the crowd was processing the weight of the band’s recent evolution in real-time.

The night came to a thunderous close with a performance of One Step Closer, which absolutely brought the house down. The energy in the room was electric, and despite the mixed reactions to some of the newer material, this final track united the entire crowd in a cathartic, nostalgic release. For those few minutes, it really did feel like being back in the heyday of Linkin Park’s prime.

Overall, L1NKN P4RK delivered a fantastic tribute to one of the most iconic bands of the 2000s. Their attention to detail and passion for the music were undeniable, and while the evening brought up some complex emotions for fans of the real band, it was an unforgettable experience nonetheless.
