Kit Major, an exciting artist from Los Angeles, first caught my attention in June of last year with her grungy, irresistibly catchy single, I Wish I Didn’t Hate You So Much. Its raw energy and memorable hook immediately showcased her talent for blending earworm-worthy melodies with an alternative edge. Later, when I heard her next single, Let Me In Your Band, I was hooked—it was even more infectious, solidifying Kit as an artist I wanted to follow closely. So, when the chance came to review her latest EP, Love.Sick.Major, I couldn’t wait to dive in.
Love.Sick.Major didn’t disappoint. Right from the opening track, Fade Away, I was struck by Kit’s ability to evoke a ‘90s indie and grunge vibe. This track instantly brought to mind the classic sounds of bands like Elastica, as did Garbage Planet, another standout on the EP. However, while these tracks lean into indie influences, Kit’s overall sound is refreshingly diverse. This EP is packed with grungy, punk-infused attitude, delivering gritty, unapologetic tracks filled with sass and conviction.
Vocally, Kit Major can be likened to some of the ‘90s rock queens like Shirley Manson or Courtney Love. Her voice embodies that same fiery spirit, bringing intensity and honesty to every track. A particular favorite of mine on the EP is In a Polite Way, a song brimming with attitude and touching on the struggles of mental health. The lyrics in the chorus capture her bold approach: “Fuck the world ’cause I’m going insane, fuck the world in a polite way.”* This line encapsulates the raw emotional edge that defines the EP, making it both relatable and cathartic.
In Love.Sick.Major, Kit Major blends indie, punk, and grunge elements effortlessly, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Fans of ‘90s rock will find much to love here, but it’s her fearless originality that truly makes this EP stand out.
