Single Review: Lemon Power- I’m An Animal

One of my favourite discoveries of this year has been the band Lemon Power, I reviewed their unique single ‘Blackout’ earlier this year, and then went to their single launch party gig for this latest single ‘I’m An Animal’ and was really impressed with how good they were live.

‘I’m An Animal’ is a different kind of track than Blackout, in that it more sticks to one genre rather than dancing all over the place like Blackout does, this track is a more upbeat affair and is super catchy. This is one is more like an anthem for the outsiders- with it’s lyrics ‘Let’s burn this city, to find a new place, a new age, I left my home, I wanted to go, I left my family, I said goodbye, because I don’t belong here, no I don’t belong here, this song is for the shameless people that stand up and dance’. Singer Sere says the lyrics express her need to get back to the roots, and get away from all social constructs.

The band draw influences from bands such as Elastica, Talking Heads and The Breeders- there is a hint of the indie styling of Elastica in this track, and the new wave influence of Talking Heads, but with Lemon Power’s own unique twist. I love singer Sere’s unique raspy voice and the bassline on this song from bassist Ale is hypnotic.

If you are yet to listen to Lemon Power, and would like to hear something indie based but unique, that speaks to those of us who are maybe considered outside of the norm- I would highly recommend you check them out, and this catchy anthem, is a great place to start.
