As the final plate of Christmas dinner leftovers is mopped up, we’re all looking for something to keep our festive flame alight, and we’ve got just the thing. Sadly this year’s Joyzine Advent Calendar was cut short (as explained here) but that means we have loads of brilliant songs still to share with you over the coming days to lighten the trudge towards the new year.
As with all of out songs this year, if you enjoy them we’d love you to consider supporting the excellent work of First Timers Fest in creating opportunities for people from under-represented backgrounds to learn an instrument, form a band, write some songs and get onstage, by making a donation here.
Art Trip and The Static Sound have been bringing the beautiful noise of righteous anger to our ears for some time now, and were one of the 32 fantastic artists to feature on the final installment of our 20 Years of Joy compilation series. Today they bring us a studio recording of ‘Algorithms of Mass Destruction’, a track which first featured in a different form on their 2023 Live Anti Static EP.
We asked the band about the track & what they’ve been up to of late.
Tell us a little about your track please
‘Algorithms Of Mass Destruction’ is a commentary on the role that tech plays within our lives. The overall message is…….
is tech enriching our lives in the way we might imagine or is it consuming all of our data? Do we control Algorithms or is it the Algorithms that control us? Furthermore, who builds the algorithms and what biases do they hold. Discriminatory algorithms are real. The idea that tech has been created that does not recognise Black people is mind blowing. Facial recognition for example frequently misidentifies Black and Brown people. ‘Algorithms Of Mass Destruction’ was born out of the difficult ethical questions that we have to ask ourselves if like us, you value a community that welcomes all. From the selling of our personal information, privacy invasion, surveillance, accessibility and the digital divide, ‘Algorithms of Mass Destruction’ is a reminder that our advancement in the use of tech could also symbolise the surrender of our freedom and communities.
Who owns the code?
What have you been up to in 2024?
We’ve been recording and mixing this year and trying to dodge a fair few punches.
And what do you have planned for the next 12 months?
New music will be released with extra gigs. Far less bruising.
