SINGLE REVIEW: PROJECT OVERLOAD – SILHOUETTES

Joyzine is not a site usually given to celebrating that day of the year that causes empty shelves at Clintons Cards’, restaurants to sell one chocolate fondant with two spoons and teddy bears to have hearts stitched on to their chests, but cynicism was pushed to one side on hearing Project Overload’s new single ‘Silhouettes’. The Coventry band are Emily, Callum, Joe, and brothers Tom and Lucas who possess a musical confidence that belies their ages (between 15 and 20).

‘Silhouettes’ floats along on a gently catchy guitar riff beautifully mirrored by the bass, and with light-touch syncopation from the drums. The vocals are a warm zephyr with enough breezy gaps in the arrangement for them to shine through, and the production is mixed with just enough reverb to add the kind of shimmer you get from heat haze on a summer’s day.

With lines like “Golden sun rays trickling down. Droplets of their warmth cover the ground. Gentle breezes whisper in my ear. Never a sky ever so clear” it feels like a modern update on ‘These Are a Few of My Favourite Things’, and the mood reminded me of another gentle song steeped in summer, ‘The First Picture of You‘ by the Lotus Eaters. If this is what the band are achieving at this end of their career then there can be only great things ahead for them but don’t forget to set a reminder to play this on repeat when summer comes along this year.

LYRICS:

Golden sun rays trickling down
Droplets of their warmth cover the ground
Gentle breezes whisper in my ear
Never a sky ever so clear

Clouds on show, performing proud
Silhouettes waiting to be found
Kites cutting across the stage
Colour distracts from the grey

Birds singing in the trees
Songs drifting on falling leaves
Sky alights in a fiery glow
Chilling air begins to blow

Candy floss clouds dotted about
Bittersweet shapes slowly fade out
As the sun sets, the stars ignite
But nothing can stop the turning of the night

So the sun might be setting
And night might be creeping
So warm rays may be going
And bitter winds may be blowing
But in my arms you can find warmth
As you wait for the breaking of dawn
But in my arms you can find warmth
As you wait for the breaking of dawn

Golden sun rays trickling down
Droplets of their warmth cover the ground
Gentle breezes whisper in my ear
Never a sky ever so clear

Clouds on show, performing proud
Silhouettes waiting to be found
Kites cutting across the stage
Colour distracts from the grey

Birds singing in the trees
Songs drifting on falling leaves
Sky alights in a fiery glow
Chilling air begins to blow

Candy floss clouds dotted about
Bittersweet shapes slowly fade out
As the sun sets, the stars ignite
But nothing can stop the turning of the night

So the sun might be setting
And night might be creeping
So warm rays may be going
And bitter winds may be blowing
But in my arms you can find warmth
As you wait for the breaking of dawn
But in my arms you can find warmth
As you wait for the breaking of dawn
