THE MUSTACHE STAYS is fantastic with an almost, unrelenting onslaught of sound from track one. The mixture of Jason Riveras sludgy guitar tone, reminiscent of the best stoner rock sounds, and the wiry distorted bass supplied by Tim Hoff, gives the sound a mix of definition and blunt force. The high-energy, never-ending drum fills of Nick Park, occupy an entire layer of sound, not just keeping a beat or maintaining time, but enhancing the songs musically and offering huge amounts of energy. Riveras vocals throughout the album soar above the band, providing a musical counterpoint his guitar playing.
The album is recorded and mixed in a louder-than-loud style, however everything is balanced fantastically and mixed across the stereo spectrum in an engaging and fun way, giving the feeling of a really well mixed live show. The energy that comes across is palpable. While the musicianship stands out, the lean and mean punk attitude leaves no room for self-indulgence. The songs are short and blistering, mostly under or around 2-minutes, with the exception of my personal favourite on the album, “Silverfuck” which clocks in at 7 mins 45 seconds. Another favourite is the album opener, ‘Shelved’ Riveras vocals give me Maynard James Keenan vibes, huge soaring lines over the dense band sound.
If you are in the mood for some in your face riffage and fun I highly recommended it. I’m very glad the “The Mustache Stays”, please never shave it off.
