Live Review: Grandma’s House at Hootenanny, Brixton 7/3/25

I came across the band Grandma’s House when the Facebook algorithms decided to put an advert for their music on my timeline. Intrigued—especially as the ad was promoting a gig celebrating women in punk—I clicked and had a listen. I liked what I heard, and as if by magic, I soon saw that the gig was up for review for us here at Joyzine. It felt like fate, and what better way to celebrate International Women’s Day (which fell the day after the show) than by checking out a line up featuring three female-led bands—Grandma’s House, IOTA, and House of Women?

Grandma’s House formed in 2018 and hail from Bristol. They are yet to release a full-length album but have put out two EPs—Grandma’s House in 2021 and Who Am I in 2023—with a third, Anything For You, set for release on April 11th.

Their sound is a grunge-tinged, post-punk riot, packed with great guitar riffs and raw energy. Vocals are shared between members, giving the live set a real sense of balance and camaraderie. I was particularly drawn to guitarist Yasmin’s rough, expressive vocals, which have shades of Courtney Barnett but with a sharper, more jagged edge. The venue went heavy with the smoke machine and moody lighting, which only heightened the drama of their performance—perfectly matching their intense sound.

The crowd was fully on board, dancing from the start, with many singing along word for word—clearly a band with a dedicated following. Their singles went down especially well, and one track How Does it Feel? had a section in French, which added an unexpected but very cool twist.

The support acts brought their own energy to the night. IOTA leaned more into traditional rock, with their singer bringing a real sense of showmanship—stepping offstage multiple times to dance with the crowd. House of Women, who I caught briefly, are an all-female band with classic rock vibes—I’ve seen them before at LOUD WOMEN Fest, and they always deliver a solid set.

Overall, this was an electrifying night of music, with Grandma’s House proving why they’re such an exciting force in the current punk scene. With their next EP on the horizon, I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Grandma’s House’s next EP ‘Anything For You’ is released 11th April
