Returning to Birmingham for the first time since their 2023 ‘Cold War Classics Vol. 2’ album tour, multi-genre band Alabama 3 really brought the energy to the O2 Academy 2 with their theatrical and easily feel good set. With their eclectic fusion of blues, electronica, jazz, country and rock, they drew a diverse crowd for an exhilarating performance.
With a dramatic entrance to a spoken word piece traversing the bands on stage personas and opening with their unique spin on track ‘Hotel California’, they immediately electrified the multi-generational crowd. Their infectious enthusiasm and high energy on stage was solidified by the elaborate theming and a few novelty balloons trying to escape the stage throughout the set which brought a celebratory air to the event. Traversing their extensive catalogue with tracks ranging from their debut 1997 album Exile On Coldharbour Lane, the album that established their raucous blend of country and club music, up to their 2008 album Hits And Exit Wounds, this collection from their first decade together when paired with the experience and well established image built up over their career since made for a seemingly effortless showcase of their showmanship and complex sound.

The diverse crowd they had drawn in was impossible to miss, barrier an eclectic mix of longtime fans and newcomers, with frontman ‘Larry Love’ (Rob Spragg) pointing out later in the set that it was a privilege to be able to play these tracks to an audience spanning generations, a testament to Alabama 3’s enduring appeal.
Midway through the set, led by Love, the band made an impassioned statement on the effect of streaming services on artists. Encouraging the crowd to support their local music scene, the fervent reaction of the crowd showed that he couldn’t have been talking to a more receptive collection of people. This cathartic outpouring of how imperative it is to support your favourite artists and local live music clearly resonated with everyone in the room, a strong understanding of their fan base and their values making for a unifying experience and voicing a message they made it easy to get on board with.
Overall, with a setlist effectively balancing their extensive catalogue and enthusiastic staging interspersed with hot seat topics on the music industry which they and their audience are clearly passionate about, the performance was a testament to Alabama 3’s commitment to delivering dynamic live shows that resonate with audiences across generations.
